Richmond ToolBank Announces “Richmond Shines” Citywide Cleanup Campaign

Free Tools Available Throughout April to Support Neighborhood Revitalization

RICHMOND, VA — April 1, 2026 — The Richmond ToolBank is proud to announce the debut of Richmond Shines , a month-long initiative dedicated to neighborhood revitalization and environmental stewardship. Building on the momentum of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s Clean the Bay Day, Richmond ToolBank is partnering with the Clean City Commission, Southside ReLeaf, and local volunteers to expand conservation efforts “upstream” across every district in the city.

Throughout April, tool lending fees are waived for eligible community projects . This initiative removes financial barriers to service, providing residents and nonprofits with the professional-grade equipment needed to transform their neighborhoods.

“Litter might look like an aesthetic issue, but it’s much bigger than that,” said Toby Vernon, Executive Director of Richmond ToolBank . “The stuff we toss—plastic bottles, bags, wrappers, cigarette butts, even vape pens—doesn’t just disappear. It ends up in our waterways, our food system, and harms wildlife at every level. This is a 100% human-caused problem, which means it’s 100% on us to take responsibility for fixing it."

“ Richmond Shines is about giving people a simple, tangible way to do that. Yes, we’re picking up litter—but we’re also cleaning, greening, and taking care of the spaces we all share. Along the way, people are meeting neighbors, building community, and getting involved in ways they might not otherwise. We’re here to make it easy for anyone to jump in, grab some tools, and help make Richmond shine.”

Eligible Richmond Shines Projects

To qualify for waived tool lending fees, projects must be volunteer-led, open to the public, and located within the City of Richmond. Qualifying activities include:

Litter and Debris Removal : Neighborhood cleanups and alleyway clearing

Environmental Maintenance : Storm drain clearing and invasive species removal

Urban Forestry : Tree care, mulching, and light maintenance

Beautification : Graffiti removal, bus stop cleaning, and vacant lot restoration

Note: Fees are not waived for private residential work, for-profit contracting, walks/runs, community outreach events, or construction-heavy projects. Consumable supplies such as trash bags and gloves may be available while supplies last.

How to Join: “Claim a Block”

Richmond ToolBank encourages community-based organizations, neighborhood associations, and residents to “Claim a Block” and lead a project this spring.

Richmond Shines Culmination Celebration

The campaign will culminate in a citywide celebration on Clean the Bay Day , May 2. Following the morning cleanups, Richmond ToolBank will host an event at its facility to recognize the volunteers, partners, and community leaders who made the inaugural Richmond Shines initiative a success.

“This isn’t just about trash—it’s about showing up. Together, let’s make Richmond shine,” Vernon added.

What do our volunteers do?

You may be wondering , what do our volunteers do? Our volunteers dive into tasks such as filling and returning tool orders, tool cleaning, branding, sharpening, and general upkeep, warehouse organization, and inventorying surplus tools. Whether you're an individual, a returning volunteer, or part of a group, your experience level doesn't matter – we're happy to have you.

People are relentlessly pelted with negative news and stories that seemed designed to reinforce the idea that everything is going downhill. What is Beyond Boundaries?

Beyond Boundaries is a non-profit that excels at empowering individuals from diverse backgrounds—including participants with disabilities, veterans, underserved youth, and those in recovery programs by guiding them through transformative outdoor adventures. 1,119 tools were leveraged by 220 volunteers

Hammers & Ales is just around the corner, and there's still time to join us on Friday, September 12, from 1 PM to 5 PM! For a decade, Hammers & Ales has brought our community together to build, connect, and raise vital funds for our mission. This year, for our 10th celebration, we're especially excited to welcome both new and familiar faces.

This year's projects will benefit Henrico County Public Schools and RVA Parks, continuing our tradition of tangible impact. Over the past decade, our community has hand-built hundreds of outdoor features and furniture for incredible organizations like Dorey Park Farmers Market and Capital Region Land Conservancy . This event directly supports the core of our mission here at ToolBank - providing tools and event equipment for changemakers throughout Central Virginia.

What is Tools for Change?

Our Tools for Change program offers a unique solution to a common problem in the nonprofit sector: resource scarcity. Nonprofits often struggle to acquire the equipment they need. We tackle this by providing community-based organizations with access to a vast inventory of over 10,000 tools (nearly 300 different types) that they can borrow for extended periods instead of buying. This affordable tool lending program is designed to be both easily accessible for our members and sustainable for us.

Project Spotlight: A ToolBank Member's Inspiring Work

We’re not sure how we’re already in May, but we’re fully embracing the arrival of busy season.

Last month alone, our tools empowered a remarkable :

1,972 volunteers to successfully complete 141 impactful projects right here in the Richmond area.
30+ local nonprofits leveraged our resources, investing just over $7,000 to access essential tools and event equipment valued at a staggering $123,000.

This not only represents significant cost savings for these vital organizations but also highlights how ToolBank plays a crucial role in alleviating resource scarcity and easing the burden of tool storage and maintenance.

Now, this is nothing new - but I absolutely love hearing from our members & here’s a testimonial from SOAR365 following a volunteer session they hosted (and is also now one of my favorite member photo submissions too).

”Their wide selection of tools, available at a relatively low cost, allows us to allocate more resources toward our mission while ensuring our projects are equipped with everything needed for success. , Their inventory has empowered our volunteers to tackle tasks with confidence and efficiency, helping us create lasting positive change in our community. Morgan has joined the ToolBank team as our ToolBOX Program Coordinator.

We’re excited to introduce you all to the newest crew member at the Richmond Community ToolBank. We’re beyond thrilled to bring Morgan on full-time and we’re extra thankful for the $100,000 grant we received in October 2024 because it not only allowed for us to bring her on full time but also increase the number of workshops we can offer in 2025.

She leads home maintenance workshops and empowers individuals with the skills and knowledge to care for their homes. Her passion for affordable housing is evident in her dedication to equipping people with the tools for sustainable homeownership.

Morgan’s background includes extensive experience in both nonprofit home repair and new construction, most recently with Richmond Habitat for Humanity. She has instructed countless volunteers in all phases of home building. Through ToolBOX, Morgan translates this expertise into practical, accessible training for the community.

When she's not wielding power tools, Morgan loves hiking along the James, getting her hands dirty in her neighborhood's community garden, and laughing at her cats' silly shenanigans.

Last post, we shared the progress our Tools for Change program made in Q1 and now, we’re covering Building Change & our ToolBOX workshops (psstt - we’ve got some exciting news on that front).

Building Change: Hands-On Heroes!

Our Building Change volunteers have been busy bees, and the results are simply beautiful! In Q1, 110 dedicated individuals put their skills and energy to work, hand-building 45 gorgeous outdoor pieces . Imagine relaxing on one of the 23 picnic tables or 17 park benches crafted with care, or adding a touch of green with the 3 planter benches and 2 Adirondack chairs .

These thoughtfully crafted items have been donated to vital community spaces such as Richmond Public Libraries , Shalom Farms , and the All City Arts Club , creating tangible improvements that everyone can enjoy. It's amazing to see the direct impact of your hands-on contributions!

Wow, Q1 already in the rearview mirror? Time really does fly when you're making a difference! We here at the ToolBank are absolutely buzzing with excitement to share the incredible impact we've made together in the first three months of 2025. Get ready to high-five yourself, because you played a HUGE part in all of this!

Tools for Change ��️

Our flagship Tools for Change program continues to be the heart and soul of what we do, providing vital resources to the amazing organizations working tirelessly in our community. And let us tell you, your support has been nothing short of phenomenal!

We were so touched by the heartfelt words from Start 1 Spark , " Grateful to have the ToolBank as a resource!" �� That simple sentence speaks volumes about the impact we're creating together.

This past quarter, thanks to you, we equipped a staggering 96 community projects with over $102,000 worth of tools ! Can you believe it? That's a whole lot of hammers, drills, and saws getting into the hands of those who need them most. This incredible achievement was powered by the dedication of 2,399 amazing volunteers who rolled up their sleeves and put these tools to work.

We also had the privilege of hearing firsthand from organizations like Tech for Troops about the significant savings they achieved on essential equipment. They shared that by borrowing from the ToolBank, they saved a bundle on chairs, tables, and safety cones, allowing them to host 300 guests for a crucial event while staying within budget. Stories like these truly highlight the real and tangible change our tools facilitate.

Here's a snapshot of the impact:

96 total projects empowered

A whopping $102,396.72 value of tools in action!
And our members only spent a collective $6,536.26 to access these vital resources.

We're so proud to support incredible organizations like Henrico County HEART , Sacred Heart Center , Tech for Troops , Woodland Restoration Foundation , Start 1 Spark , and Rise Against Hunger . Each of these groups is making a real difference in Central Virginia, and we're honored to play a part in their success.

One of my favorite parts of my job is seeing our tools in action and reading testimonials from our member agencies. Our crew are huge fans of the James River, and you can often find us exploring its expansive trail system when we're not at the warehouse. So, we're especially thrilled to celebrate one of the many dedicated member agencies doing such good work throughout Richmond: the Friends of the James River! Friends of the James River kept busy in November & December, capping off a strong Q4 with some serious progress along the Buttermilk Trail.

Their dedicated volunteer trail crew tackled a truly impressive challenge, moving hundreds of 20-30 pound stones to reinforce the trail buckets that support the new section. Imagine the workout! We're so proud to support their efforts with our trusty tools and buckets. #TeamworkMakestheDreamWork

This recent accomplishment perfectly exemplifies the dedication and impact of the Friends of the James River. Since 2017, they've been a force for positive change in our community. Let's take a look at their remarkable achievements:

2024 in Review: Building Change, Tools for Change, and So Much More!

What a year it’s been! As we look back on 2024, we’re bursting with pride about all we’ve accomplished together. With the support of volunteers, members, and our community, Richmond ToolBank has made some serious strides in creating lasting change. Let’s take a quick look at what we achieved this year!

Building Change: Volunteers Making a Difference
Building Change is all about bringing people together to roll up their sleeves and make a real impact. In 2024, we had 1,061 amazing volunteers join us to build 736 pieces of outdoor furniture ! These weren’t just any pieces – they went to awesome organizations like Village Green, the Midlothian YMCA, and New Kent Parks, creating beautiful, lasting spaces for our community.

And it’s not just about building things – we also provided over 150 hours of tool education! Volunteers left feeling more confident with power tools in hand, and hopefully, inspired to take on future projects that make a difference.

Tools for Change: Powering Projects Across Central Virginia
When we talk about impact, Tools for Change is a big part of it. This year, our warehouse helped power 1,162 projects across Central Virginia. How? By lending out 23,333 tools – that’s a 24% increase from last year! All told, we saved our members over $940,000, meaning they could focus their budgets on what really matters: their incredible community programs.

And get this – all that tool value (about $974,958!) was accessed for just $33,849 in fees. Talk about a win-win for our local organizations!

ToolBOX Workshops: Building Confidence, One Skill at a Time
We’re also proud of the 43 ToolBOX workshops we held in 2024. These workshops equipped over 300 current and future homeowners with new skills, giving them the confidence to tackle home improvement projects – big or small. It’s all about empowering people with the tools (literally!) they need to succeed.

Hammers & Ales: A Day of Fun, Teamwork, and Giving Back
Our annual Hammers & Ales event was a smashing success! 40 teams came together to build 38 pieces of furniture for the community. It was a day of good times, great company, and, of course, some serious teamwork. And the best part? Those 38 pieces are now helping out local organizations and making Richmond an even better place to live.

Thanks to all of you who made 2024 such an incredibly productive year. We couldn’t have done it without you, and we can’t wait to keep building, growing, and changing the Richmond community together in 2025.

ToolBOX receives game-changing grant from Impact 100 Richmond

We're thrilled to share some exciting news! ToolBox has been awarded a $100,000 grant from Impact 100 Richmond. This generous gift will allow us to expand our programs and reach even more homeowners in need.

Empowering Homeowners, One Skill at a Time

Shawna, a dedicated homeowner, faced a common challenge: a growing list of home repairs she couldn't afford or didn't know how to tackle. With rising costs and limited resources, many homeowners like Shawna are struggling to maintain their homes.

But Shawna's story is changing. Through hands-on learning at ToolBox workshops, she gained the confidence and skills to take on these challenges. From basic plumbing to drywall repair, she's now equipped to maintain her home and save money.

ToolBox is breaking this cycle by providing the knowledge and skills needed to keep homes in good repair. With this $100,000 grant from Impact 100 Richmond, we're poised to expand our impact:

More Workshops : We'll offer an even wider range of workshops, from beginner-friendly to advanced techniques.
Mobile Training Units: Our skills will hit the road! Our mobile unit will bring hands-on training directly to your neighborhood.
Increased Availability: We're committed to increasing the number of our workshops, and they’ll remain accessible to everyone. Our "pay-what-you-can" model ensures financial barriers won't hold you ba ck.

Learn how our Tools for Change program has impacted two local nonprofits supporting Richmond communities.

Happy FALL (and almost Halloween!),

One of our favorite things about being part of the ToolBank community is hearing about the incredible work our member agencies are doing. Recently, we received two heartwarming testimonials! Up first, we'll hear from Robert Gabay, founder of the Chimborazo Native Food Project , highlighting the transformative impact of our Tools for Change program. Secondly, we'll hear from Peter Paul Development Center .

"None of the actual work, be it the invasive plant removal, planting of trees, or large-scale weed suppression, would have been possible without the help of the tool bank. I had the ideas, and you all provided the muscle to actually get the work done."

Robert's inspiring story showcases the incredible potential of our community when equipped with the right tools and resources. With the support of our Tools for Change program, Robert was able to:

- Revitalize a forgotten corner: Transform a neglected space into a productive, food-producing area.

- Enhance biodiversity: Create a more diverse and thriving ecosystem.

- Benefit the community: Provide a valuable resource for the local community.

Robert's words emphasize the importance of our Tools for Change program as a catalyst for positive change. By providing access to essential tools and resources, we empower individuals to bring their vision to life and make a lasting impact on their communities.

Next up, here are the words of Peter Paul Development Center , a member agency that has benefited greatly from our tool lending program. By streamlining the process of ordering, scheduling, and pickup, we've helped them save time and resources.

"Volunteers were able to perform their duties without struggling to find the right tools to work with. We were able to have everything they needed ready for them when they arrived!" This has not only improved efficiency but also saved them thousands of dollars, allowing them to allocate resources to other critical areas. By providing volunteers with the right tools, we're empowering them to make a meaningful impact and inspiring them to continue their valuable work.

"The process is so easy and affordable! It has really made a huge difference for me because I am able to quickly order what I need, schedule a pickup, and have everything ready with no hassle! Did I mention it is super affordable!?"

Through our Tools for Change program, Peter Paul Development Center has:

- Hosted 25 community-driven projects supporting their school and network of students and their families.

- Equipped 344 volunteers with 269 quality tools and event equipment.

- They have spent $436.85 since joining, but they value of their borrowed tools is $14,560.05.

Q3 Highlights

Hi, hellooooo!

Another quarter has flown by, and we're excited to share the incredible accomplishments we've achieved TOGETHER!

Our warehouse has been buzzing with activity, providing tools, equipment, and expertise to our extensive network of Tools for Change member agencies. We've completed 418 projects with the help of 6,464 dedicated volunteers. Over 6,400 tools have been checked out, and our members have spent $11,872.38 to borrow tools valued at $321,442.98.

Thanks to the amazing work of the Friends of the Lower Appomattox River, trash and invasive species were removed from popular trails, Hanover County Parks and Recreation built picnic tables, removed invasive species and beautified landscapes across Hanover County during a Day of Service! And finally, our event equipment was put to good use by Diversity Thrift during their Big Gay Market hosted the 2nd Sunday of every month - and what makes these events special is that they raise funds supporting LGBTQ families & artists.

We've also been busy giving back to our community through our Building Change sessions. Thanks to the efforts of 323 volunteers, we've donated 67 picnic tables, 36 park benches, 15 compost bins, 5 Adirondack chairs, and more to local community partners like New Kent Parks & Recreation , Louisa County Public Schools , and Chesterfield Foodbank .

And finally, our ToolBOX workshops have continued to be a valuable resource for our community. We've provided 8 hours of hands-on training to 22 participants, covering topics like advanced saws, drywall, and power tool basics.

Together, we've made a significant impact on our community. Let's continue this momentum and keep empowering our neighbors to create positive change.

Four Fantastic Events: The ToolBank crew had a blast hosting four outreach events that brought together friends, volunteers, donors, and community members.

Two Beautiful Benches: While enjoying a pint, people helped us paint two stunning benches that were donated to MAD RVA adding a touch of creativity to our community.

Team Bonding and Trivia: Our team had a blast bonding over tool-themed trivia, proving that we're not only good at giving back but also at having a good time.

Community Clean-Up: Over 25 volunteers, including members from Fahrenheit Advisors and Dyke Nelson Architecture joined us to upgrade two sections of Scott's Addition, creating safer walkways for pedestrians and revitalizing Rosemoore Park.

Here’s the Impact of Your Donations: We raised $1,090 at Starr Hill and your donations directly support our Tools for Change program, enabling us to provide essential tools and resources to our community. With this donation, we've HIT our $20,000 goal. The more the raise means we can make our 10,000 tool lending warehouse better equipped to support our network over over 530 member agencies.

And From the Richmond ToolBank Crew to YOU, we want to THANK YOU! We want to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who attended, volunteered, and donated to our Cheers for Charity event. Your support is invaluable. We can’t wait to see how much more good we can do together in 2024!

Drink beer & do some good! See you at Starr Hill Beerhall & Roof Top in September.

We're in the middle of August, which means summer is winding down & fall is quickly approaching. Our member agencies keep us especially busy during the fall with plenty of autumnal landscaping projects and outdoor events.

Last fall, we loaned out a whopping 19,669 tools, helping our member agencies complete 1,146 projects – that's incredible! This year, we're gearing up for another impactful fall, and we can't do it without our amazing volunteers.

During the month of September, we're honored to serve as Starr Hill Beer Hall & Rooftop's Cheers for Charity Partner. This is our 2nd year doing this event, and we're raising a glass (and some serious funds) for Richmond ToolBank!

Our goal: Reach $20,000 for ToolBank's Annual Fund Campaign. But hey, who doesn't love exceeding expectations? Our pie-in-the-sky goal is $39,000!

Happy SUMMER!

With the longer nights & warmer weather, our member agencies have been keeping us busy at our 10,000 sq foot tool-lending warehouse. We're thrilled to share the incredible impact we've achieved together in the first half of 2024! Because of the support from our generous corporate sponsors, monthly donors, and dedicated volunteers, we've empowered our member agencies and fostered a thriving community of service.

Here's a glimpse of what we accomplished together:

Welcomed 49 new members: Our growing network allows us to reach more people in need.
Empowered 103 member agencies: We provided essential tools and resources to help agencies deliver their vital services.
Completed 497 projects: Thanks to your support, we facilitated hundreds of projects that make a real difference throughout Central Virginia.
Equipped 8,069 volunteers: Using our tools, volunteers logged hundreds of hours completing projects that improve upon our city!
Member tool borrowing: A staggering 10,237 tools borrowed by members represents the tangible impact of your support, valued at $405,431.76!

These numbers translate to real change in the lives of countless individuals. Peter Paul Development Center recently shared how the ToolBank has made completing projects around their center not only easier but more affordable. At the end of April, with the help of volunteer and our tools they got their playground ready for the summer!

Highlights from Hammers & Ales 2024

Our 9th Annual Hammers & Ales knocked it out of the park!

We just had to brag a little – Hammers & Ales 2024 was a total smash! Over 240 of you awesome volunteers swung hammers (safely, of course!) and built a whopping 19 picnic tables and 19 park benches . Talk about teamwork!

All those amazing builds at Dorey Park are now on their way to new homes at Capital Region Land Conservancy, Dorey Park Farmers Market , and Good Neighbor Village . Big thanks to everyone who swung a hammer, donated, sponsored, volunteered, or just hung out and made the day awesome.

And guess what? Thanks to your incredible support, we raised over $20,000! That's a serious chunk of change to keep our Tools for Change mission rolling. Our Tools for Change program is the heart of our mission which enables our member agencies to open our warehouse doors to a treasure trove of 10,000 tools (that's nearly 300 different types!) and borrow what they need to get the job done, without the hassle of buying them.

Here's the coolest part: borrow for weeks a time! For everyday projects, it's just 3% of the tool's value per week. So, they can wield a mighty power washer ($150 value) for just $4.50 a week, or swing a trusty hammer ($10 value) for a mere 30 cents! It's affordable, accessible, and lets our community organizations equip dedicated volunteers with quality tools without breaking the bank.

To help make the most of this fantastic day of community engagement and mouth-watering delights, we've put together some tips & reminders for an unforgettable experience!

Gates open at 1:30 PM!

Building Session #1 = 2 PM

Building Session #2 = 4 PM

We recommend arriving at Dorey Park Farmers Market 30 minutes before your building session to allow plenty of time to find parking, check-in, find your team, and grab a beverage or two before building a park bench or picnic table. Dorey Park has ample parking for you, just follow the folks directing traffic.

ToolBank is providing everything you need for a successful build day. All the lumber, tools, materials, and instructors are ready for you. Just be ready to use those muscles, hang with your crew, and enjoy a beverage or two.

STAY HYDRATED

Hydration is key and we encourage you to bring your refillable water bottle to keep yourself refreshed. There will be water-filling stations throughout the event. Plus - we'll be slinging craft beverages, and food trucks will be selling n/a beverages as well. There is also a splash pad located near the building zone in case you want to cool off!

PREPARE FOR THE WEATHER

Hammers & Ales is a RAIN OR SHINE event. Check the weather, wear comfortable clothes + shoes meant for action, and be prepared for an awesome day at Dorey Park. Also, don't forget to pack that sunscreen!

Craft Beverages, Food Vendors & Games!

CRAFT BEVERAGES: Be sure to check out our craft beverage options. We'll have local craft beer, light lagers, cider, a canned cocktail, and wine by the glass. We ask that you get your ID checked before purchasing your drinks tickets (cash & cards accepted). Beer sales start at 1:30 PM and the last call is at 4:30 PM.

Remember, proceeds from your drink tickets directly support Dorey Park Farmers Market & their amazing mission.

N/A Beverages: Food truck vendors will be selling n/a beverages at their trucks + The Squeeze will be on deck slinging their tasty lemonades.

FOOD TRUCKS: Food Vendors will be located near our Beer Zone. Check these sites for their current offerings, Big Wife's Mac & Jus Cukn ! The Squeeze will be serving tasty lemonades all day too!

POST HAMMERS & ALES: Dorey Park Farmers Market is hosting their Second Saturdays concert series. Gates open at 6 PM and Full Moon Fever will be taking the stage at 7 PM!

Springing into Action: Celebrating Q1 Wins and YOU!

April already?! We're here to highlight our accomplishments for Q1!

Spring has officially sprung (ignoring these surprise chilly days!), and we're bursting with excitement at what our incredible community accomplished together in Q1! While winter might try to slow things down, this year, our member agencies proved unstoppable .

Ready for some inspiring highlights?

Greener pastures, brighter smiles: Elk Hill Farms and Hope Cares RVA joined forces to beautify the farm with landscaping projects, getting those gardens prepped for stunning spring blooms!
Fighting hunger, building hope: Students at St. Christopher's School & St. Catherine's School hosted Richmond's Rise Against Hunger, packing a whopping 4,000 meals for our neighbors in need.

We’re loving the arrival of SPRING, how about you?

When I think of longer nights and budding flowers , it reminds me to do some spring cleaning and tackle some projects at home that I was avoiding. Thankfully, we’ve got TooLBOX workshops to not only provide some inspiration but also strengthen skills and increase confidence when it comes to home projects!

If you haven’t heard, ToolBOX is all about empowering you with knowledge and hands-on skills through our educational workshops designed for new and veteran homeowners, renters, and everyone in between!

Happy 2024! It's hard to believe that a NEW YEAR is here and we're staying busy during the first month of 2024.

Earlier this month, I celebrated my one year employment anniversar y at the Richmond ToolBank! It’s been an incredible year, I successfully planned our annual fundraising event, Hammers & Ales, raised over $18,500 dollars from individual donors, and put together our inaugural Impact Report.

When I reflect about the year I’ve had, I’m feeling extra thankful for our community but also inspired by the work that our member agencies managed to put in during Q4.

As we take a look at our Q4 data , we’re absolutely impressed with the impact our Tools For Change program accomplished from October 1 - December 31. Our member agencies are always busy during the fall but start to shift their planning efforts to 2024 once December kicks off, and this was by far the busiest quarters this year.

Below is a snapshot of the achievements our #ToolsForChange member agencies have accomplished last quarter as well as an overall rundown of our totals this year. We’re celebrating our amazing network of volunteers, sponsors and donors. We’ve made incredible strides in driving positive change throughout Richmond, which we couldn't have done without YOU!

Celebrating 2023 while looking forward to 2024

As we approach the end of 2023, we are thrilled to reflect on the incredible strides we've made together through our Annual Fund Campaign. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we've raised an impressive $10,434.07 out of our $15,000 goal , propelling our Tools for Change program to new heights.

With 2024 only 28 days away, we’re feeling a little reflective, and I wanted to share some highlights that we’ve accomplished together. When you join us as a volunteer or build a picnic table with us during a Building Change session, donate some of your hard-earned money or read our eNewsletters, you are apart of our community . Meaning, our accomplishments are YOUR accomplishments, and let’s take a beat to celebrate this!

Project Milestones: From January through today (Dec 4th), our Tools for Change program has been a catalyst for transformative projects. We are proud to announce the completion of 1,001 projects by our member agencies. These initiatives have positively impacted communities, leaving a lasting mark on the community we serve & live within.
Volunteer Engagement : Our commitment to community engagement shines through the numbers - 13,959 volunteers were equipped and ready to make a difference. It's more than a statistic; it's a testament to the power of collective action and the spirit of giving back.
Tools and Savings: The impact goes beyond the projects themselves. Our member agencies have borrowed 18,793 tools while saving a staggering $796,748.90 . Every tool within our 10,000 tool-lending warehouse represents an opportunity for positive change, and the cost savings directly contribute to maximizing the efficiency of our initiatives.
Outdoor Furniture and Building Change Participants: The tangible results of our efforts are seen in the 620 outdoor furniture pieces built and the 1,706 Building Change participants who have picked up a power driver and gotten a little dirty at our warehouse. Each piece of furniture and every participant represents a step towards creating sustainable, vibrant communities.
Amplifying Your Donation : What makes our Annual Fund Campaign unique is the direct connection between your donation and community impact. Every dollar raised goes directly to our Tools for Change program, magnifying its effect by 33 times through our 3% tool tending fee. This ensures that your contribution isn't just a donation; it's an investment in community growth and positive transformation.

It’s hard to believe that we’re in the middle of November, which means that one of my favorite days of the year is almost here.

Giving Tuesday is just around the corner ( Tuesday, November 28 ), and as I busily prepare for that, I’m savoring submissions from our member agencies.

When I get a notification alerting me of a NEW Tools for Change testimonial, I usually drop what I am doing to read them. I don’t know about you, but it’s easy to get lost in the daily weeds of work, and I am thankful for these beautiful submissions to snap me back to reality of what we accomplish here on the daily.

I recently heard from Richmond’s Sacred Heart Center and here’s what they had to say about being a ToolBank Member Agency.

“The garden bed kits were a great way to physically improve our community garden and provided a fulfilling volunteer experience for a corporate partner! The kits had everything we needed and were extremely intuitive to build.”

“As a non-profit, every expense is just that- expensive. The ToolBank has made several projects possible for the center and provided many pieces of outdoor furniture that we would not have had the resources to do ourselves.”

“This past Friday, 11/3, we hosted a group from Ernst and Young who helped us replace old, falling apart garden beds and replace them with new ones. They also helped shut down our community garden for the season so it will be ready for next spring.”

Equipping Salem's Light with the right equipment to provide preventative care for our four-legged friends!

As a non-Virginian, fall is such a wild season to me with the random hot days followed by chilly temps. I’m not quite sure what to do with it, so I’m enjoying autumnal fall walks in shorts & a tank top while cooking tasty soups. Hopefully, you’re finding ways to enjoy this confusing fall weather.

It’s hard to believe that November is already here, which means that one of my favorite days of the year is just around the corner. Giving Tuesday takes place on Tuesday, November 28, and I love witnessing the launch of the giving spirit as the holiday season continues.

When a Tools for Change member agency submits a testimonials, it's amongst my favorite notifications to receive. I don’t know about you, but it’s easy to get lost in the daily weeds of work, and I am thankful for these beautiful submissions to snap me back to reality of what we accomplish here on the daily.

Here’s one from Salem's Light , a Richmond non-profit that strives to improve the lives of dogs through community outreach, education, advocacy, and proactive spay and neuter.

Salem’s Light: Tools for Change Member Agency

“We have used the ToolBank multiple times for tents and tables to help host Street Dog Coalition free veterinary clinics for pets of the homeless and those at risk of homelessness. This is a huge benefit as the number of tables and tents needed vary from clinic to clinic and resources and storage concerns limit the amount we have on-hand!”

“With limited funding and resources, we have a standard supply of tables and tents but often need additional supplies for single-day events. The ToolBank makes the process of renting supplies incredibly easy and affordable!”

“Many of the pet owners helped during these events don't have the funds to provide necessary care for their pets. These events ensure that owners are able to keep their pets and that they have appropriate vaccines and other veterinary care. Tables and tents for individual veterinary stations are an essential part of these outdoor events!”

They sent a follow up after a recent pop-up clinic, and let me know:

We've raised 65% of our Annual Fund Goal because of donors like YOU!

The short and sweet false fall has ended with the arrival of chillier temperatures this week, and my recipe docket reflects that with tasty soups bubbling. I hope that you’re finding ways to stay cozy.

When I am not writing content and snapping photos, you’ll find me on some local trails with my chocolate lab, Lily. I especially love seeing picnic tables & park benches built in our warehouse during Building Change sessions along my favorite trails.

I headed out to Dorey Park for their last installment of their seasonal farmers market (Saturdays; June - October, 9 AM - 12 PM) and enjoyed a tasty fall treat on one of our picnic tables. I was able to catch up with them about how ToolBank has impacted the growth of their market.

Earlier this month, I shared with you our Q3 Impact but today, I wanted to share with you how your donation impacts our member agencies directly.

Reflecting before diving into Q4

Celebrating the work accomplished in Q3 while inspiring others to help us reach our 2024 Annual Fund Goals!

Hello! It’s Jamie again, and I am your Mission Advancement Manager at the local ToolBank. I’ve wrapped up my first Annual Fund Campaign kick-off in September, where we managed to raise $1,600 in 30 days! In total, we've raised $9,716.74 this year and we've got a little under $5,300 to raise to hit our goal for 2023.

But rather than finding ways to get over the end of year fundraising hump, I'm feeling inspired by the work that our member agencies managed to put in during Q3. They didn’t let the summer heat slow them down!

As we take a look at our Q3 data, we’re absolutely impressed with the impact our Tools For Change program accomplished from July 1st - September 30th. Traditionally, the summer is a little slower as our team is focused on Hammers & Ales + our member agencies are planning large scale projects in the fall when the weather is a bit cooler!

Below is a snapshot of the achievements our #ToolsForChange member agencies have accomplished, but more importantly we're taking a moment to celebrate our amazing network of volunteers, sponsors and donors. We’ve made incredible strides in driving positive change throughout Richmond, which we couldn't have done without YOU!

Seeing our impact broken down into digestible numbers truly helps me understand the significance of our Tools for Change program. I walk around our 10,000 square foot tool-lending warehouse each weekday, but to see our tools in use at a community project is one of my favorite things to witness.

At the beginning of October, I hit the road and snapped photos at two different locations (Ancarrow's Landing & Elk Hill Farm), and it was energizing being surrounded by such positive and driven volunteers that were ready to crush their to-do list. In a few hours, both volunteer groups were able to plant 30+ trees, clean up trails, rid a section of the trail from invasive species, plant native plants in freshly painted containers, build 50+ park benches & picnic tables, paint a few rooms that needed some TLC, and install new park benches over at Ancarrow's Landing. They put in the work and we supplied them with the right tools for the right job, and that is what our Tools For Change program is all about.

The combination of knowing our Q1 - Q3 impact numbers and enjoying two afternoons on-site at community projects has made me feel extra thankful for what we do on a daily at our tool-lending warehouse. It also makes me even more grateful for every individual donor and corporate partners that has donated to us not only this year but in years past, because every dollar counts. Every donation, larger or small, is a force multiplier for our member agencies.

Momentum Building: Celebrating $8,686 and Aiming for $15,000 in Our Annual Fund Campaign!

At the heart of Richmond, something incredible is happening. Our community is coming together to continue strengthening our unique and invaluable program, Tools For Change . With your help, we've already achieved a remarkable milestone in our Annual Fund Campaign, raising $8,686 from 135 generous donors.

But we're not stopping here! We have $6,313 left to reach our goal of $15,000 by December 31st, 2023, and we're confident that together, we can make it happen.

Tools For Change Program: A Richmond Gem

The Tools For Change Program is not just another charity initiative; it's a one-of-a-kind resource that sets Richmond apart. Fall is finally here, and I am excited to enjoy a cooler season doing a few of my favorite autumnal things like picking apples & baking some delicious pies. But instead of daydreaming about baked goods, I wanted to share a few updates about our 2023 Annual Fund Campaign.

So far, we've raised $8,676.78 together & our community is thirsty because we've already earned $347 from Starr Hill so far, and we know we can inch closer to $600 with your help. From today through September 30th, we're still the Cheers for Charity partner, and for EVERY pint sold of The Love - we'll receive $1.00 which feeds directly into our #ToolsForChange program.

Our Annual Fund Campaign: A Key to Progress

Our annual fund campaign provides the financial backbone for our Tool For Change program. It enables us to maintain and expand our tool-lending warehouse which includes 10,000 + tools of 250 types. We're thrilled to share that, as of now, we've raised $8,676.78 towards our campaign goal of $15,000 by December 31, 2023.

Together, we've raised $7,701 for Richmond's #ToolsForChange

It's me, Jamie (again), and I am the Mission Advancement Manager. A large part of my job is fundraising and stewardship, and I've been incredibly thankful for the donations that have been rolling in since we launched our Annual Fund Campaign on September 1st at Starr Hill Beer Hall & Rooftop. During our kick off event, we saw some familiar and new faces during our patio hang, and enjoyed some refreshing brews as the sunset over Richmond.

We hope to see you during our month long celebration of community, and change-making. For every pint of LOVE sold in September, $1.00 goes directly to our Annual Fund Campaign. Money raised during this campaign fuels our Tools For Change mission.

To help make the most of this fantastic day of community engagement, music, and mouth-watering delights, we've put together some tips & reminders for an unforgettable experience!

Gates open at 10 AM! Building Session #1 = 11:00 AM and Building Session #2 = 2 :00 PM
We recommend arriving on the island 35 minutes before your building session to allow plenty of time to find parking, check in, find your team, and grab a beer or two before building a park bench, picnic table, or dog house!

3rd Annual Citywide Tree Celebration

Arbor Day RVA is a citywide celebration of trees and of course all of the amazing things that come from having a healthy community and urban forests. We celebrate each October because fall is the best time to plant trees in this growing region. To understand what we're doing now, I have to tell you how Arbor Day RVA started in 2020. This is a big shout out to my friend, colleague and amazing tree champion Daniel Klein. Daniel started Reforest Richmond, which is a collaborative campaign to increase Richmond’s urban tree canopy to 60% by 2037. We are committed, not only to increasing citywide tree canopy, but also in dismantling systemic racism and environmental injustice through an evolving, equity-centered, community-driven effort. Rebuilding canopy is impossible without rebuilding trust.In 2020, Daniel Klein received an offer of 12,000 Redbud Seedlings from Dominion Energy. Every year Dominion does “Project Plant It” and gives away a bunch of seedlings to elementary school kids. Because of the pandemic, school was not in session in 2020. But they still had all of these Redbud seedlings on order from the Arbor Day Foundation. Someone reached out to Daniel Klein, knowing that he is a major tree guy, to see if he could help. And that desire to ensure the seedlings were planted led to the creation of Arbor Day RVA. Daniel brought in the Richmond ToolBank and some other organizations and we made it into a citywide celebration of trees and engagement with all of the local environmental organizations. Chesapeake Bay Foundation, our own James River Association, Capital Trees, Urban Forestry and multiple other organizations that have an interest in caring for and expanding our urban forest. The premise was really just to engage folks in tree giveaways and tree planting events.

So that's how Arbor Day RVA started in 2020. Last year was the second year for Arbor Day RVA and we scaled it down and focused more on planting. This year, we're focusing on a lot of planting and a lot of education. It will run from October 15th to October 23rd. You can find the 24 different events happening around the city during that time frame at www.reforestrichmond.org The Richmond ToolBank is focused on helping the whole Reforest Richmond umbrella achieve a goal of planting and giving away a thousand trees. We are really focused on planting trees because there's a ton of benefits that trees give, but the focus is also on planting the trees that we can ensure the maintenance of. It doesn't do any good to plant a trillion trees if most of them are not gonna live or if they're ultimately gonna end up becoming carbon that goes back into the atmosphere. We're focused on planting trees, giving away some trees to homeowners doing some educational activities, and that's gonna be a whole week of fun events.

There's still a little bit of mystery around what a community forest is and what the value of having a thriving diverse community forest, an urban forest, here in Richmond is all about. There is a magnificent body of research that shows the concentration of heat vulnerable communities and how those heat vulnerable communities are based around old discriminatory, racist housing and development policies from 70 years ago. The education that we focus on is a lot about tree equity, green space equity, hopefully igniting some passion, but also tapping into the desire that already exists in so many people to do things like plant and care for trees. The education that we are focusing on is around urban heat, island tree equity, proper planting care and maintenance of trees. We are also partnering with the division of urban forestry to lead two important programs. One is a citizen science program that collects the data of our urban forest tree inventory. And the second is a volunteer powered program that waters the trees that are planted around the city. There's a lot of community service and civic engagement that can be done around urban and community forests in order to bring greater equity to the urban forest, not just for the short term, but for the long term, hopefully cultivating a new generation of tree loving and tree inspired people.

Arbor Day RVA is also a signal boost for anybody who wants to hold an event. So you can either join an existing event by looking at the listings and seeing what appeals or you can also just reach out to us and we will help to boost your own event. On October 15th for example, we will be planting 175 or 250 or so trees at Forest Hill Park and you can sign up to volunteer with us there. Other organizations will be having tree giveaways and tree planting projects as well so lots of options! And because we've been doing these environmental projects for a few years, we have some sponsorship dollars that has allowed us to waive all of the tool handling and borrowing fees for all of the ABER Day projects. So everyone who's planting trees or who's holding an event can borrow tools through the Richmond ToolBank and they're all sponsored. All those fees are waived for Arbor Day RVA. Trees are such a fun and easy way to get involved at a deeper level with environmental justice, environmental equity. I invite everyone to join us in a community effort to bring greater equity to Richmond's urban canopy!

It’s more than a tagline, it’s a movement.

In the span of a short walk, hike or bike ride through Richmond one can hardly turn a corner without encountering a neighborhood or public place that has been shaped or entirely created by volunteers. Consider the City’s extensive inventory of lovely parks & community gardens; or the many winding miles of well-maintained hiking and biking trails; heck, just look up to the urban forest! All of these beautiful gems have humble beginnings as simple but important volunteer projects that eventually attracted sufficient investment to dedicate staff and organizational resources to.

Until just about eight years ago, before ToolBank began operations here, the dedicated individuals that took on those bold volunteer-powered initiatives that have made Richmond the beautiful, thriving city is it today did so through sheer determination and shrewd resourcefulness. Over many years (and, I suspect, many beers) those folks cobbled together enough tools, equipment, materials, and good-heartedness that the job did eventually get done. But the work of inspiring and empowering a new generation of volunteers very much continues.

Over the last 17 years or so, volunteerism in American has tipped steadily downward, a terrible trend that is both unfortunate and reversible. It’s not certain that Richmond has exactly mirrored this trend but what is irrefutable is that circumstances of the last three years have certainly changed the way and the “why” individuals are volunteering. Each year at the ToolBank, we equip about 10,000 volunteers with over $1 million (retail value) in tools to more than 100 community-based organizations with widely varying missions and objectives. Each tool order tells us a lot about the needs of that particular project, the group coordinating the project, the volunteers, and the community they benefit. In aggregate, all of those individual data points reveal vitally important themes that help us as an organization do our very best to support the changing needs of volunteers and community-based organizations.

Some key takeaways:

Volunteerism through large and incumbent organizations is way down. Volunteerism with informal and grassroots groups is way up.

Like everything else, the COVID-19 pandemic all but completely shut down volunteer programs across America in March 2020. Here in Richmond, a headquarters to eight Fortune 500 companies with historically strong service records, those corporate volunteers vanished for two full years and have only recently begun to cautiously return to large-ish group volunteer projects. While 2020 saw the lowest of low watermarks for volunteerism, it seems that lockdown and a renewed fight for racial & social justice provided fuel to power new individual action and grassroots support. In 2021 a full 75% of our tool orders were loaned out in support of small groups of individual volunteers like “Friends of” groups, faith-based, and neighborhood groups. One of the most hopeful signs of the post(ish)-pandemic voluntary sector is that these grassroots groups have remained active at the same time that corporate volunteers have begun to re-engage.

Focus on environmental justice is stronger than ever. In the hands of grassroots groups, ToolBank tools are a game changer for Richmond’s “Thriving Environment” objectives.

In the last two and a half years, we’ve equipped nearly as many environmental projects as we did in the previous five years before that! Grassroots groups have been reactivating greenspaces, planting thousands of trees, installing acres of new community gardens & farms, converting turf to sustainable landscapes, tearing away noxious and invasive plants, and constructing new community infrastructure. This is all essential work if we are going to meet the recommendations of the Richmond 300 master plan around urban canopy coverage, native landscaping on public lands, and building more climate resilient public spaces.

With easy and affordable access to ToolBank tools, a new generation of volunteers are empowered to reverse the downward trend in volunteerism and shape Richmond into the socially & environmentally equitable city we’ve promised to be. Corporate and individual volunteers across Richmond have always had a drive and a passion to do community work. Unfortunately at one time, they were forced into putting resources into purchasing the tools and equipment needed to fulfill these projects that were near and dear to their hearts. Things like cleaning the canal walk and planting community gardens become more daunting when having to consider what tools and equipment were necessary. Finding funding to cover those purchases was challenging if not potentially a hindrance to the project and vision itself and at the end of these projects, even finding storage to house those purchases was difficult. In many cases, the tools were not going to be used again for months, if ever. And potential resources were going into an expenditure for materials that might only be used once. We were in an environment of spending thousands of dollars for what essentially became disposable tools.

The lack of readily available resources to fulfill these initiatives created a hindrance for sustainable volunteerism, for folks that truly felt passionate about helping their community. That is really where the Richmond ToolBank came in to fill the gap. We provide the physical tools, take the financial burden off these initiatives, help the volunteers figure out what tools and equipment they will need for their specific project and solve the issue of what to do with those tools when they are done with each single project. We also know this allows our members to think about doing future initiatives, which is a clear win for our community.
