Richmond ToolBank is a nonprofit organization dedicated to lending tools and equipment to community-based organizations and volunteers. As a proud affiliate of ToolBank USA, a national network of 11 other chapters along with ToolBank Disaster Services & Hubs across the nation, Richmond ToolBank is part of a powerful movement transforming tool access into community impact nationwide.

In a region where under-resourced nonprofits and community groups often lack access to the equipment needed to tackle critical neighborhood challenges, Richmond ToolBank bridges that gap and transforms tool access into community power. Our extensive inventory features over 10,000 tools, all aimed at supporting our mission to empower ambitious goals for community initiatives and their members. By borrowing tools from ToolBank, community organizations can significantly increase their volunteer capacity and concentrate on their essential work, rather than worrying about storage, space, funds, and the time required to maintain tools.

Our slogan, "Tools for Change," encapsulates the purpose of Richmond ToolBank. We believe that everyone has an innate ability to contribute to something greater than themselves. Furthermore, Richmond ToolBank is committed to sustainability, working diligently to minimize environmental waste by reducing packaging and plastic usage.

Our Programs

Tools Lending

The ToolBank Tool Lending Program is at the heart of everything we do. For more than 30 years, the ToolBank network has been empowering the not-for-profit sector with the tools, equipment & expertise that are central to completing tens of thousands of community transformation projects each year. Member agencies pay a tool handling fee equal to 6% of the total retail value of the tools borrowed per week, saving community-based organizations thousands per year.

Currently, only not-for-profit organizations are eligible for a ToolBank membership, such as:

  • Nonprofit/Charitable/Tax exempt organizations
  • Schools and PTAs/PTOs
  • Neighborhood associations
  • Faith-based groups
  • Civic organizations
  • Government agencies

Building Change

Our Building Change program is a one-of-a-kind  experience for individuals, families, corporate teams, or groups of any kind. These Building Change experiences allow teams to use our tools and materials to build outdoor furniture and garden features that we donate to community groups in need. Past recipients we've donated to include Henrico County Public Schools, the Boys and Girls Club, the YMCA, and many more.

We bring the materials, tools, and expertise — your team brings the energy and fun! We can accommodate up to 100 people during these team builds at our warehouse or at your location. We also welcome groups to utilize our space for a team lunch or catered event afterward.

ToolBOX

The ToolBOX program offers hands-on home care and DIY workshops designed to help you build skills, gain confidence, and have more fun caring for your home all on a pay-what-you-can pricing scale.

Workshops are held at the ToolBank and offsite throughout Richmond, making participation easy, fun, and affordable. All tools, materials, and supplies are provided, so you can show up ready to learn. Topics include Home Maintenance 101, Power Tools 101, Electrical 101, Tiling, Furniture Flipping, and more.
